This artwork is called 'Carefully Incorrect', inspired by a little girl who attended a workshop I ran. I asked her to spot the shapes within the facade and cut them out of coloured paper to build a new version of the building. She followed my instructions very seriously — cutting out the arches one by one, taking her time, tongue stuck out in concentration — and then stuck all the shapes on back to front.
I loved it. Inspired by her confidence and her inaccuracy, the final artwork follows the architecture of the building... ish.
As an artist, I'm often given blank, uninspiring walls to paint, but my background as an architect means I always yearn for something more, so this project was a dream challenge. The built environment can take itself awfully seriously. I think now and again we could all take a leaf out of a six-year-old's colouring book and have some fun.
