RAINBOW RIBBONS

RAINBOW RIBBONS

‘The Rainbow Ribbons’ is a piece of sculpture integrated with the architecture of the newly built kiosk and into the landscape of the newly built Claremont park. The Rainbow Ribbons were commissioned by Argent as part of the new Brent Cross Town.

A key component for Brent Cross is to encourage sport and play whilst uniting people to build communities. With this in mind I was thinking about what physical activity I could build a workshop around that could inspire a physical form. And then it came to me. What is, hands down, the best bit of PE equipment in school?…. The ribbons. I put ribbons in the same category as bubbles. It doesn’t matter what your age, it is hard to not smile when given a ribbon to play with. You don’t need skill, you can flail around and still create something beautiful!

I led a workshop where we invited local young people to make their own ribbons. They created all different lengths, colour combinations and even managed to stuff 4 ribbons through the tiny metal hoops for maximum impact. Young children and to my delight the odd teenager got involved. It’s hard to resist a ribbon!  I collaborated with the brilliant Tim Jobling to photograph the kids throwing shapes while twirling ribbons. From the photographs I designed the sculpture. Working closely with The White Walls Company we created these large scale ribbons.

Hanna’s architecture background means she creates work that really inhabits and accentuates its space. ‘Rainbows Ribbons’ striking colours and dynamic shapes, sparked by the play sessions with children of all ages, enliven and draw focus to this part of Claremont Park, and perfectly match the sense of fun and freedom our designers have created there.
