In 2018, Hanna noticed a distinct lack of women in the wood and metal shops where she worked and decided to take action. She organized a meet-up with the aim of bringing ten women into MakerLabs to connect over making. Within 24 hours, all 75 tickets were gone. The first gathering filled MakerLabs with inspiration and energy from an incredible community of women.
Hanna was deeply moved by the stories shared during the event and gained further insight into the barriers preventing women from making. From this, the “Tools for Women” residency was born. Focused on education and mentorship, the residency empowers women to take up space, build skills, and support one another in making.
The program is ongoing and has welcomed new members, fabricators, and stewards, fostering a more inclusive maker space. The residency has continued to evolve and remains active today.
